INFOCAN PRESENTS AT DCON 2003!

Michael Li, Chief Technology Officer for InfoCan Management, has been invited back to England this summer to speak at the Delphi Developers Conference 2003. Held annually in Wokefield Park of Reading, United Kingdom, this event will take place from June 9 – 10, 2003. Developers interested in a more intense training can register for a pre-conference session held on June 8, 2003. Michael Li will be presenting the following sessions.

Introducing IntraWeb – June 9, Session 04 & June 10, Session 04 (repeated)
IntraWeb V5.0 is undoubtedly one of the first development environment that allows building large scale web applications (weblications) using the full power of Borland's RAD tools Delphi, JBuilder, C++ Builder, without sacrificing the ease of use of these tools. In addition to Delphi, IntraWeb is also available for Delphi, C++, Java and Visual Studio.net. (coming soon).

With version 5.1 (available as a free update to all registered Delphi 7 users), IntraWeb introduces many new and exciting features, such as PDA support, mobile phone support, improved WYSIWYG HTML editor, over 40 new components, extensive new documentation, improved performance, better RAD integration, extended browsers supported (including Opera), new demos, new session tracking options, more configuration options, and much more!

In this session, we will demonstrate some of these brand new features in IntraWeb V5.1 and how they can help make developing weblications a breeze.

Developing Data-Aware Controls And Custom Datasets – June 9, Session 11
The ability to create components in Delphi is not new. Most developers often start by inheriting from existing VCL classes. However, enabling a component to be data-aware requires slightly more work, regardless if you are connecting via BDE, ADO, dbExpress or InterbaseExpress. This session will cover the steps required in developing data-aware controls, usage of TDataLink vs TFieldDataLink, updatable controls, and changes introduce since Delphi 6. In addition, we will also address how to create custom datasets like TClientDataSet or other similar TDataSet descendants. This session assumes you have some familiarity with component creation in Delphi, C++Builder or Kylix.

From BDE To dbExpress, ADO, DOA, InterBaseExpress – June 10, Session 32
The BDE was first introduced almost a decade ago and certainly had its fair share of glory. Moving with the tides, the database connectivity landscape is now flooded with alternatives: dbExpress, ADO, DOA or InterbaseExpress. As of Delphi 7, Borland announced that "SQL Links are now deprecated; no further enhancements will be made to SQL Links and it will not be included with Delphi after 2002. Borland recommends using dbExpress for SQL server database access in Delphi." So, if you have applications that are using the BDE today, the logic question is "Which is the best alterative to BDE?" The answer will depend on the nature of your applications, current development investment and your corporate infrastructure.

This session will discuss the pros, cons, technical differences and implementation strategies for each of the mentioned alternatives. In addition, this session will also cover best practices in preparing for a successful migration. The transition from BDE is inevitable whether you are starting a new application from scratch or migrating existing BDE based applications forward. This session will provide valuable information to aid your decision process.

This session will discuss the migration approach from BDE based solutions to the newer generation of DBMS connectivity choices like dbExpress, ADO, InterbaseExpress, and DOA. Technical differences and implementation strategies for each alternative will also be addressed. This is an excellent session for those who are pondering the migration of existing BDE based applications to Delphi 7 or starting a new application from scratch.
